WOODEN TOYS FROM ODISHA

Wood carving is a very ancient and traditional art of Odisha. In Jagannath temple of Odisha the idols and other mythological figures are made out of wood. A lot of colorful wooden handmade toys are also made and sold on a daily basis. Wooden toys have evolved from Patta paintings and they reflect the natural heritage, wildlife and mythology of Odisha state. The wooden toys are used for decoration, gifting purposes and recreation for children. The type of wood used by the artisans keeps on varying from place to place depending upon the local availability of the wood. Generally these are made out of one block of wood only.

Many different types of toys are created such as birds, horses, elephants, human figures, etc. which are painted in bright colours to attract the kids. The toys are simple and handy without much craftsmanship. The colors that were used in the past were all natural made out of vegetables and fruits. Preparing the colours itself was an art which took some time to learn. But as time progressed, artisans started using readily available colours as they were easier to obtain. Nowadays the demand for wooden toys has fallen due to the availability of toys in other mediums and also due to alternate avenues of entertainment for children. In today’s world where plastic toys are found everywhere, these toys are a nice throwback and have a natural feel to them.
